GovernEssence Advisory is led by Jo-Ann (Jo) Riley who founded GovernEssence Advisory to help organisations govern with clarity and confidence. With 15+ years of governance leadership, she has worked with Boards and executives to create practical, values-driven systems that work in the real world.
Jo has built a reputation for strategic foresight and governance excellence across the higher education, water, local government, finance, and legal sectors, helping boards and executive teams build strong governance, strategy, and leadership capability.
Most recently at Deakin University, Jo led corporate functions across strategic planning, governance, risk, procurement, contracts administration, people and culture, health and safety, infrastructure technology systems, and information management. She also spearheaded the University’s five-year, $750 million Infrastructure and Property Strategy, engaging widely across faculties and divisions to align investment with future needs.
Jo was President and Board member of the Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association (TEFMA) representing universities from across Australia and New Zealand from 2020 – 2025.
A graduate of Harvard University, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a Fellow of the Peter Cullen Trust, Jo is currently completing an MBA. Her approach combines academic insight, operational excellence, and genuine care for people and purpose.
